Fishing for Sturgeon in San Pablo Bay

A former lieutenant in the US Navy with a BS in physics and an MBA in finance from Stanford University, Brian Frenzel holds dual posts as the CEO of Tosk, Inc. and as a private investor/management advisor with AnVent Enterprises in the San Francisco Bay Area city of Mountain View. Brian Frenzel counts fishing among his hobbies.

One of the most sought-after fish species in San Francisco Bay is the sturgeon, and one of the best places to find sturgeon is San Pablo Bay. A tidal estuary that spans the North Bay and East Bay regions of San Francisco Bay, San Pablo Bay serves as an excellent sturgeon fishing spot due to its relatively shallow waters and dramatic tidal changes.

Sturgeon are far easier to find in fast-moving tides, particularly during periods of low tide. In the San Francisco Bay, tides lift food from the bottom of the bay and its nutrient-rich deltas, leading to movement by the normally bottom-feeding sturgeon. The best time to fish for sturgeon in San Pablo Bay is during periods of tidal fluctuation between January and March.
